AI Will Ruin Our Future

AI and LLM’s have long lasting negative consequences that outweigh the benefits
AI Will Ruin Our Future

The feeling of turning through pages or having to dig through the thousands of Google search results to find what you’re looking for — these days are long gone since the introduction of ChatGPT back on Nov. 30, 2022. OpenAI kicked off a huge trend of Large Language Models (LLM’s) which has left a lasting impact on almost every part of our society. These effects are felt in many different places like education, computer science, art, and our own economy, but despite the push for AI, the ultimate impact will be negative.

In education LLM’s allow students to breeze through school without having to do much. If your teacher assigns you an essay you can just GPT it, and for teachers you can make lessons for your class. ChatGPT and other LLM’s have allowed people to get lazy in the pursuit of education for both teachers and students, and when you are using LLM’s to do all of this work, you are losing the skills to do it yourself and you are cheating yourself out of the opportunity to gain more knowledge. Many students come out of universities not knowing anything about their field because all they did was just query all of their class work.

The effects that LLM’s have on education is seen predominantly in computer science fields. People in these fields go to school for four years or more just to come out knowing next to nothing and not being able to answer simple interview questions because they just queried their way through school. In the job market for this field, a lot of positions have been replaced because people are able to work faster with the help of LLM’s, but these LLM’s make errors, causing vulnerabilities in software we use everyday. LLM’s steal code that has already been written and train off of it. This is ruining the creation and originality of different pieces of software and software design.

In terms of creation, art is being ruined by Generative AI (GAI). These AI models don’t make original pieces of art. They train off of different pieces of art and then try to modify and copy the data they were trained on. The art they generate can be things like music, images, and videos. All of the forms of media they generate are very uninspiring and don’t have the same touch that a piece of art made by a human does.

AI is also impacting our economy by creating a bubble of money being traded around by different companies. These companies, notably OpenAI, Nvidia, Oracle, and others, are trading around trillions of dollars, and as soon as the bubble pops, our economy will take a nosedive. AI is taking jobs from real people as well which means there is less money being spent by people.

All of these negative impacts and more are caused by AI. AI and LLM’s will be disastrous to the future of the economy, education, and many other fields. These factors outweigh the positives of AI and show why we should rely on it less and use our own creativity.
