Music is often dismissed as background noise or even a distraction filling the silences of boredom and long days. But for millions of people, especially high school students, music is way more than entertainment. It is a powerful and mind changing anthem that helps shape who people are, supports mental health, and influences cultures all around the world.
As a high school student it is impossible to ignore the impact music has on daily lives as those songs get people through their day.
In a time where the pressure of academics, social expectations, and the struggle to figure out what’s next, music has a way of sourcing constant stability. Studies and experiments have shown that music can reduce stress levels and help improve your mood. As many schools fill with noise, most students escape to music to help them reflect and reset before going home or heading to class. By putting on your favorite song, you can change the course of your whole day.
The love of music comes from its ability to turn ordinary moments into meaningful memories. Whether it’s a song playing at a school dance, music blasting at a celebration, or a familiar tune playing in the background during time with friends and family, music brings people closer together. Long after the event is over, it’s often the music that brings the memories all coming back, reminding us not just of where we were, but of who we shared those moments with.
Beyond the support it brings, music also plays a key role in shaping identity. The music that people like to listen to often reflects their values and the kind of person they are. Genres, artists, or just a handcrafted playlist of your favorite songs, are what is forming moments in some people’s lives. For some, discovering music has brought change into their life by opening doors to more creative things like writing and performing, which has opened doors to future careers and lifelong friendships.
Music also creates community. From school bands and choirs concerts to the music club after school, It’s all just there to bring people closer together. In these shared music rooms there, different backgrounds, different statuses, and even different opinions, but all that is replaced with the love of music. For many students music programs give them a sense of belonging that just a normal classroom wouldn’t provide. With an environment based on teamwork and practices, these music classes turn more into a friendship than they do boring assignments.
On a larger scale, music has long been the backbone for social change. Throughout history artists have used their platforms to address issues going on in the world, raise awareness, and inspire those listening to take action. Today’s music still continues that tradition with endless music tracking mental health and identity issues for the younger generations. Music is not just here to be words on paper but it’s here to empower and guide newer generations to do amazing things.
In the end, I’m seeking to tell stories that actually matter, and music definitely stands out. It has an effect on almost everyone and that effect is quite powerful. Music turns everyday family events into something meaningful, which brings a great way to remember those good times. The power of someone’s favorite song is why music will continue to change the world.
