As the school year comes to an end students are not the only ones earning superlatives. Around the building teachers have unofficially received their own student created titles recognizing the funny habits, personalities, and random moments that make them unforgettable. While some superlatives are based on classroom behavior, others have nothing to do with school at all. From coffee addictions to mysterious personal lives, students have turned everyday observations into some of the funniest conversations of the year.
Mr. Stanley was voted “Most Likely to Have a Secret Second Life”. Students joke that nobody actually knows what he does after school because he somehow avoids sharing any personal information. Another teacher Mrs. Buchwald earned “Most Likely to be Mistaken as a Celebrity.” Students point out her appearance and her involvement in school activities.
Of course some superlatives stayed connected to the classroom. Ms. Keirn received “Most Likely to Say ‘Phones Away’ Every Five Minutes” while Mr. King “Earned Most Likely to Assign Homework Before a Break.” Students laughed while explaining that some catchphrases become so common that entire classes can predict exactly when they will be said.
Other titles focused more on personality than teaching style. Mr. Felton was voted “Most Likely to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse” because students think he is very smart and logical to be able to fend for himself. Meanwhile, Mrs. Gary earned “Most Likely to Become TikTok Famous.” Many said it was because of her ceramics talent, while others said because of her lifestyle.
Teachers known for oversharing stories from their lives also stood out. Ever-present sub Mr. Cika was voted “Most Likely to Tell a Story That Has Absolutely Nothing to Do With the Lesson.” Students admitted these stories usually start with school-related topics but somehow end with old memories or coaching stories. Even though you might not get work done when Cika is your substitute, his stories and talking is what students always remember.
Mr Koval was voted “Most Likely to Say ‘This Will Be on the Test’ about Everything”. His pre-med class being one of the hardest classes in SHS makes his tests very long and difficult for their inclusion of a lot of information.
Some superlatives were surprisingly wholesome. Ms. Choe earned “Most Likely to Know Everyone’s Business,” not because she gossips but because students naturally tell her everything. Another teacher, Mr Diedrick, received “Most Likely to Brighten Someone’s Day.” Diedrick is always in the hallways greeting previous and current students and checking in on them.
Although the superlatives are meant to be humorous, students say they also reflect on the personalities that make teachers memorable.
Long after finals, assignments, and quizzes are forgotten, students often remember the small things instead. The teachers who made class entertaining, who always make sure you’re having a good day, and always tell you to put your phones away.
In the end these superlatives celebrate the unique personalities that make the school feel more human everyday. Even though these awards are unofficial they show the appreciation students have for teachers who make school more enjoyable, memorable, and fun throughout the entire year.
